June 6, 2001: It took me 1 hour 26 minutes to make the drive to St. George, UT, and the first thing I did was to check into the Singletree Inn, where most of us, as well as the guest instructors, would be staying. Next I registered for the camp at the Guitar Gallery on Main St.

Fingers itchy and ready for action,I talked Ryan and Andy (Gallery employees) into an impromptu jam among the guitars.


Actually, it wasn't the camera - we were kind of fuzzy - all that 3.2 Utah beer, ya see!

That night Ed Gergard gave an incredible concert, during which I became an instant fan. The following day I took a Master Class (private lesson) from him and many evenings he joined us for nightly jam sessions around the pool.

Ed has an amazing touch and connection with the music he plays, as well as with the instrument. It was an honor to take a class from him. No kidding!

Friday night I joined several other students in "Student Showcase" performances. We were each limited to one song, and I chose to play and sing "Under Sedona Skies," which I had modified during my session with Ed Gerhard. The song uses DADGAD tuning and was extremely well received.
 
Saturday night about 10 of us performed four songs as part of a "Guitar Ensemble" conducted by Mike Christiansen, an amazing guitarist in his own right. He and his son Corey - incidentally, the guitar editor at Mel Bay! - had given a joint (Not that kind of joint, Muffy - This was Utah, remember?) concert the previous evening.

Following the Ensemble performance, Chris Proctor performed. Chris is amazing, using tunings and effects as none I had ever heard.
